About
I’m James Smith. I’ve been a member of the Bryan/College Station community since Fall, 1991, when I came to Texas A&M University right out of high school. Since then, I’ve earned my B.S. in physics and my M.A. in English, both from Texas A&M. I work for the University and help with Cepheid Variable, a student science fiction, fantasy, and horror fan club. I’m a member of the Brazos Valley Chorale and sing in the choir at Friends UCC.
Looking back at how my mother raised my three sisters, my brother and me, I realize that we had an amazingly healthy diet of home grown food with little of the processed and restaurant food that we get so much of these days. Even though we had to get out and work in the hot summer months around San Antonio, TX, the results were well worth the effort.
I’m an amateur gardener. My day job is providing computer consulting services for faculty at Texas A&M University. My passions outside of work run from playing the piano to singing to writing. ; I haven’t touched a garden for almost twenty years, but I have an itch to get back into it. This blog is the result of me trying to compile as much information as I can about the B/CS area as well as share my own experience starting a square foot garden.
I think the B/CS area has an excellent climate for gardens. It doesn’t get too dry or too wet. It gets a bit warm in August, but we only have a few weeks of freezing weather that makes for a very long growing season.
If you are just getting started with a garden, then join me for an adventure as we discover what works and what doesn’t. Even if you’ve been gardening here for a long time, you’re still welcome to join us and hopefully help us not make some common (or not so common) mistakes.
If you would like me to write on a particular topic or just have something you want to say, feel free to drop me an e-mail at jgsmith@bcsgardening.org.
