December To Do List

The weather is finally getting cold. It’s been drizzly all afternoon and in the upper 40s. Current forecasts indicate a 40% chance of snow Friday. Looks like I’ll finally need to pull out the last remaining plants from summer.

This is also a good time to put together a list of things I need to get done this month. I won’t have much time to get outside around the new year, so I need to make sure everything’s done and ready for January. I can’t wait until the last minute this time.

According to the calendar, I can plant:

  • Carrots
  • Brussels Sprouts

January will see Garlic and Cabbage added to the list. I have cabbage seeds. I’ll need to look around town for garlic seeds or starters.

With that, here’s my list:

  • Clean out tomatoes, old cabbage, kohlrabi, and eggplant
  • Trim back the rosemary
  • Clean out weeds
  • Hand-till unplanted squares (easily done since the dirt hasn’t been compacted)
  • Find garlic starters or seeds
  • Find brussels sprout seeds (and plant a square or two)

I’ll save turnip greens, onions, and other January plants for next month. I don’t have a twelve-inch deep bed, so for now I’m not planning on anything that needs that depth.

You should find garlic sets at the Coop. Call first to make sure they have them. Last time I talked to someone they said January. Farm Patch might get them too as I know they had onion sets.

Happy planting!
